Ever since 1989, the Mazda MX-5 has created a cult following around the world. The little “pocket rocket” is available in most countries around the world. It is one of the Japanese car maker’s best-selling cars.

It is currently in its third generation, and you can buy it in roadster and soft-top formats. This year, the Mazda MX-5 celebrates its 25th birthday!

To mark the occasion, Mazda are planning to use the occasion to launch the new fourth-generation model.

Secret launch

According to Lifestyle Europe, Mazda will be launching the new MX-5 in three different locations at the same time.

Everything is still hush-hush at the moment. What we do know is Mazda are setting up launch events in the United States, Spain and Japan at the beginning of September.

As of May 2014, up to 945,000 Mazda MX-5 models have rolled off the production lines since its launch in 1989.

The new Mazda MX-5

We all know how the Mazda MX-5 is the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car. And we also know how awesome the car is to drive.

But what do we know about the new fourth-generation model? Again, we don’t know much information about the new model. Here is what we do know, and what motoring experts believe will be in the mk4 MX-5.

Fact: Mazda and Fiat have joined forces on the new MX-5

It’s not uncommon for rival car makers to work together and pool resources. Mazda did it with Ford. Remember the Mazda 121 – a.k.a. the Ford Fiesta?

Today, Mazda have joined forces with Fiat for the new generation MX-5. The technology behind the new car is also going to be in a new, future Alfa Romeo model.

The engines that power both cars will come from the specific car brands. But both models will roll off the Mazda Hiroshima production line in Japan.

Educated guess: Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology will be present

SKYACTIV refers to the technology Mazda use in their current model lineup. The technology includes engines, gearboxes, bodies and chassis.

At the 2014 New York International Auto Show, a SKYACTIV body shell made its debut. What got the motoring press excited is the fact that it looked like an MX-5 body shell!

Enthusiasts and motoring journalists have wished for a faster and lighter MX-5. It is likely that their wishes will come true on early September!

Fact: Mazda will sell the new MX-5 in 2016

The bad news about the new Mazda MX-5 is that consumers will have to wait another two years before they can buy one!

Mazda have confirmed that the fourth-generation MX-5 will be available to buy in 2016. At least, that’s what Mazda USA have said. There is no news on whether the car will be available to buy earlier in other parts of the world, such as Japan and Europe.
