Philips is expanding the capabilities of its Hue lighting system even further with the Philips Hue White Ambiance kit. The company promises that the white ambiance delivers “every shade of white light” from color temperatures of 6,500 k to 2,200k. And by hooking up the bulbs to the Philips’ Hue app, you can use the “Routines” feature, which shifts the color temperature of bulb as the day progresses, supposedly leading to better sleep.
Philips Hue White Ambiance Features:
Like other Hue bulbs, you can just control the Ambiance from your tablet or phone, or link it up with Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, If This Then That (IFTTT), and a number of the other products and services.
The White Ambiance bulbs are billed as a natural companion to the day or night light cycle of the sun, encouraging users to wake up in the mornings and dimming the light temperature to a low-level of light before going to bed. The low light mode is similar in theory to Apple’s upcoming Night Shift feature in iOS 9.3, that cuts down on the amount of blue light users interact with in the evening hours to facilitate a better night sleep.
Philips Hue White Ambiance Price:
The current white Hue bulbs will let you change brightness level, but not the color temperature. If you are new to the Philips Hue ecosystem, you can pick up the new white ambiance starter kit for $129 — which comes with the two bulbs, a dimmer switch, and the Hue base station — while a single bulb will cost $29.95. The new white ambiance bulbs will be available in the US from Spring 2016.
